PEOPLE Video team seeks a hands-on Director to create and drive a weekly digital reality series that follows the PEOPLE team and the biggest stories they cover. This is a hybrid role for a creative who can produce, shoot, direct on the fly, shape real-life story arcs, and help craft compelling edits in post. Think fast-paced, character-driven, stylish, fun, and always real while maintaining the voice of the PEOPLE magazine brand.
Assignment Details
40 hours a week
Start date: May 2025
End date: 3 months with potential to extend
Hourly Rate: $50 - $60
Location: Hybrid - 3 days in New York DDM Office, 2 days work from home
Assignment Responsibilities
- Direct & Shoot in the Field: A flexible creative that can lead small crews in capturing vérité, stylized b-roll, interviews, and high-stakes moments. Set visual tone and make staff comfortable while keeping scenes moving and natural.
- Social-first programming sensibility and experience. And, Creative strategist with a sharp sense of good programming.
- Identify storylines and character arcs in real-time. Track beats, anticipate drama, and pivot as needed.
- Collaborate on series tone and style, ensuring a consistent visual and narrative approach across episodes. Bring fresh creative ideas to enhance storytelling and audience engagement.
- Work closely with magazine and digital teams to integrate their schedules and projects into the story naturally. Manage sensitive or real-world issues with professionalism and discretion.
- Work closely with editors to build out story arcs, shape interview selects, and ensure pacing, tone, and structure serve the episode.
- Review cuts, organize selects, and provide clear editorial notes. Flag missing coverage or story gaps early. Help ensure fast turnaround without sacrificing quality.
- Supervise camera crew and hire and train new crew members.
- Ensure brand guidelines and voice are adhered to in all executions.
- Respond to all requests and communications in a timely and thorough manner.
Skills/Experience
- BA or BS in Broadcast Journalism, Communications, Marketing, Film/TV or a related field is preferred.
- 5+ years in unscripted/reality/documentary production
- Excellent leadership
- Flexible, fast decision-maker

- Editing and creative mind
- Strong organizational and prioritization skills
- Ability to multitask, prioritize projects, communicate progress and work under tight deadlines
