Responsible for all aspects of audio recording and editing, sound design and reinforcement, basic/archival video recording, and audio equipment oversight and maintenance for the Department of Music, Theatre and Dance. When feasible, this position may lend expertise and/or assistance to the Dean’s and Chancellor’s offices. This position will also include supervision of student labor and related technical operations as assigned.
- Record, livestream, produce, and archive digital (and sometimes physical) audio (and sometimes video) recordings of student/faculty performances. These recordings will be used for faculty scholarship/creative activity and student professional development activities, including for productions, conferences, radio broadcasts, web casts, and competitions. Archival recordings may be requested for outreach to alumni and/or the community.
- Set up: a) Live sound reinforcement and livestream equipment for productions, conferences, radio broadcasts, web casts, and competitions. b) Sound systems for other university-related and off-campus groups/ensembles using the Fine Arts facilities (Recital Hall, Studio Theatre and Drake Theatre) or other Music department events held on and off campus in other venues. This will include coordination with facilities and may include set up of chairs, tables, podiums/lecterns, choral risers, shells, etc. c) Coordinate and, when needed, assist contracted third-party sound reinforcement teams for Orientation and Commencement events in the Health and Sports Center.
- Supervise and train student labor in the elements of sound/event tech requirements for all department facilities.
- (If qualified by MFA in sound field and/or 5 years’ tested experience, teach basic and advanced sound classes, supervise sound practicums, and advise department administration on the Sound Recording Technology minor.
- Collaborate with a) the Music, Theatre, and Dance Department in events planning, identifying scheduling conflicts and ensuring sufficient sound and equipment set-up and tear down staffing. b) College of Arts and Sciences and UNK personnel in coordinating and implementing technical operations in the Fine Arts Recital Hall and Miriam Drake Theater. This may include set up/tear down of chairs, tables, podiums, LCD projection equipment, choral risers and shells, etc.
- Maintain and repair all sound systems, communications equipment, and recording/playback equipment for Music, Theatre and Dance and, in cooperation with the IT Coordinator, the audio equipment in its classrooms.
- Submit budget recommendations, including detailed price and product information to department chair for purchases and maintenance of sound equipment and software.
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s Degree (in progress or completed) and professional experience in music and/or theatre audio production, demonstrated excellence in sound recording and editing.
- Experience with audio recording, sound reinforcement, and web streaming.
- Knowledge of existing and emerging professional audio and editing technologies.
- Experience training workers, working with diverse populations, and promoting communication between programs/departments.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Master’s Degree: Audio recording, sound reinforcement, or related field.
- Experience with Web services for video streaming.
- Experience with live sound reinforcement for live performance and staged theatre.
