The Associated Press is an independent global news organization dedicated to factual reporting. Founded in 1846, AP today remains the most trusted source of fast, accurate, unbiased news in all formats and the essential provider of the technology and services vital to the news business. More than half the world's population sees AP journalism every day.
The Associated Press seeks a news assistant with a history of successfully assisting in all-formats storytelling to join its team in China.
Responsibilities: Reporting to the Greater China News Director, this news assistant will aid in in-depth research, translation and reporting in support of the AP's team covering China. The role may also include assisting in producing and editing video stories for AP’s broadcast, digital and mobile customers and platforms. As a member of a dynamic, round-the-clock operation, you must be prepared to assist with reporting in all media formats to help produce a competitive and comprehensive news report. You must have the ability and willingness to work any shift, including at night and on weekends, or as coverage demands, as AP is a 24/7 operation.
We’re looking for someone who will:
- be able to work under deadline pressure to help reporters and videojournalists cover a wide range of topics related to China.
- have a great news sense, with the ability to assist with communicating stories that people will want to share, like and talk about on social media and other platforms.
- have strong communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively with the diverse team of journalists at the AP who operate in all formats: text, photo, video, audio, digital/social, interactive and graphics.
- pursue innovative and inclusive coverage techniques while maintaining AP’s standards for integrity and objectivity.
- have technical skills in video production and editing, in both static environments and the chaos of breaking news, or have the willingness to learn. This includes finding and verifying user-generated content on social media platforms.
Preferred Qualifications: You must possess advanced research skills, as well as the ability to work within an all-formats team to apply those skills from start to finish on breaking news and short- and long-term projects. Applicants should have strong experience pursuing confirmation of breaking news, chasing leads that deliver scoops and setting up reporting trips that include getting permissions and interviews. You must work effectively in a deadline driven, dynamic and competitive newsroom environment, and understand how news content is consumed across a variety of devices and platforms.
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience, such as at least three years of full-time news experience as a news assistant or researcher in a news bureau or regional desk.
- Authorization to work in China. Due to accreditation rules, this position is open to Chinese nationals only.
- Advanced-level professional competency in written and spoken English and Mandarin.
- Strong interpersonal, organizational and planning skills, with the ability to juggle multiple projects.
We will consider strong candidates who do not meet every listed qualification. You may use a cover letter to describe the unique qualifications you would bring to this role.
Application deadline is May 13, 2025 at 11:59PM EST.
