The Miami Herald is looking for an enterprising reporter to cover education in South Florida.
This is a job for a resourceful digger who is committed to accountability reporting, a compelling writer who can deftly pull together a complex narrative, and a journalist who understands that building a loyal audience around a topic requires publishing consistently and often.
The focus of the beat is education in one of the most diverse regions in the United States. The education beat is at the intersection of politics and family life, and nowhere is that more true than in Florida in 2024, a state built on immigrants and whipsawed by culture wars. We’re looking for a reporter with the sophistication to see through the noise and get to the bottom of how these issues are actually playing out in our schools. A core focus of the beat will be coverage of Miami-Dade public schools, the third-largest school district in the United States.
At the Herald, we prioritize impactful accountability reporting, great storytelling, and a reader-first focus. As a digital-first McClatchy newsroom, the Herald and its journalists utilize emerging technologies to engage readers, analyze readership data and add elements that tell a story beyond the written word. We do it in one of the most exciting news towns in the world, where the opportunities are endless.
We’re looking for someone who is excited about working in a bilingual newsroom in one of the most diverse and dynamic communities in the United States. Language skills - Spanish, Portuguese, French/Creole - all add value in South Florida.
McClatchy Media’s journalists are expected to take advantage of opportunities to ethically harness and leverage artificial intelligence and other automation to enhance and elevate their work and to find efficiencies that free them to focus on source-building and high quality, deeply reported journalism.
