About KCTV:
KCTV5 is the CBS affiliate, serving the Kansas City metropolitan area.
Job Summary/Description:
KCTV5 is looking for a Digital Content Producer who lives and breathes social media—someone who can curate, verify, and package what Kansas City is talking about into smart, fast, accurate, high-performing content across our social platforms and digital products. This is not a “post links to stories” role. It is a real-time curation + distribution position at the center of our digital newsroom.
You will identify trends, discover compelling user-generated content (UGC), build platform-native posts, and collaborate with producers/reporters to turn developing stories into must-share updates—while upholding KCTV5’s standards for accuracy, fairness, and editorial judgment.
Duties/Responsibilities will include (but not be limited to) the following:
- Lead social media curation for KCTV5: spot trends, breaking news signals, and community conversations worth elevating.
- Monitor platforms (Facebook, Instagram, X, TikTok, YouTube, Threads, and emerging platforms), scanners, and key community sources to identify timely content opportunities.
- Package platform-native posts (short copy + visuals/video) optimized by platform and audience behavior.
- Coordinate with newsroom teams to amplify reporting and keep social feeds accurate during breaking news.
- Write and publish digital content when needed (web updates, live updates, push alerts, etc.).
- Engage with the audience: manage comments/messages using station guidelines, elevate tips, and route credible leads to the right desk.
- Track performance and adjust strategy using analytics (reach, watch time, engagement, follower growth, referral traffic).
- Maintain a consistent brand voice while tailoring tone and format per platform (informative, human, concise, non-sensational).
- Work a schedule that supports news (including early mornings, evenings, weekends, holidays as needed).
Qualifications/Requirements:
- Bachelor's degree in Communications, Journalism, or related field.
- 2–3+ years producing digital/social content for a newsroom, media brand, or high-velocity publisher (experience level flexible for the right candidate).
- Strong news judgment and excellent writing/editing skills.
- Demonstrated ability to curate (not just create): identifying what matters, adding context, and publishing quickly.
- Comfort working in a breaking news environment with rapid decision-making and tight deadlines.
- Working knowledge of social best practices (captions, hooks, thumbnails, aspect ratios, accessibility, headline discipline).
- Basic photo/video editing skills (e.g., Adobe Premiere, CapCut, Canva, Photoshop, etc.).
- Experience producing short-form video (vertical video editing, subtitles, beat-driven pacing).
- Experience with live coverage workflows (live blogs, stream clipping, social live updates).
- CMS experience and basic SEO knowledge.
- Working knowledge of AP Style and the ability to write clean, accurate copy under deadline.
- Analytics experience (Meta insights, YouTube analytics, social listening tools, Google Analytics/Chartbeat/Parse.ly, etc.).
