About the Role
TEGNA, the parent company of 64 television stations in 51 U.S. markets, is hiring a Data Producer & Researcher who finds stories in data and is able to make the data easy to understand. This producer supports the Enterprise data journalism team by acquiring, analyzing, and validating information that powers data-driven reporting. This role works closely with the Data Journalist–Reporter to surface story ideas, provide evidence, and strengthen both breaking news and enterprise reporting. This position combines data analysis, research, and verification, serving as a critical support role in ensuring accuracy, depth, and credibility. The preferred work location is Denver, but candidates in any TEGNA market will be considered. This is a hybrid role.
Responsibilities
- Acquire data through public records requests, government databases, scraping, and independent assembly.
- Organize, document, and maintain datasets for reporting and reuse.
- Monitor datasets to spot emerging trends and story opportunities.
- Use data to help prove or disprove topics that are top of mind for audiences.
- Conduct quick-turn data analysis for breaking news stories.
- Provide analytical support for enterprise and investigative projects.
- Conduct in-depth background research on a wide range of topics.
- Gather evidence to support reporting and investigations.
- Use AI tools to support data research and analysis.
- Assist in building timelines, comparisons, and contextual analysis.
- Fact-check data, figures, and methodology used in stories.
- Verify claims and ensure responsible interpretation of findings.
- Clearly document assumptions, limitations, and caveats.
- Translate analytical findings into clear summaries for reporters and partners.
- Support collaboration with contributing reporters and local market teams.
- Work with outside experts when additional validation or context is needed.
Qualifications
- 2 – 3 years experience in data analysis, research, journalism, or a related field.
- Experience in a local or national newsroom is preferred.
- Experience working with spreadsheets, Flourish, Tableau, Canva, SQL, and/or Python or R.
- Experience using AI tools to support data research and analysis.
- Familiarity with public records requests and government data.
- Strong research, verification, and organizational skills.
- Ability to communicate findings clearly to reporters and partners.
- High attention to detail and accuracy.
Pay range and compensation package
Pay Range: $36.06—$43.27 USD
TEGNA offers comprehensive benefits designed to safeguard the physical, mental and financial health of our employees and their families. Our 401(k) program offers full, part-time and temporary employees the opportunity to contribute 1% - 80% of their pay on a pre-tax basis to TEGNA’s 401(k). Contributions made up to the first 4% of pay are eligible for a 100% match from the company and are 100% vested from day one. Regardless of participation in TEGNA medical plans, ALL employees and their eligible family members receive nine free virtual doctor’s appointments with a physician through Teladoc, and 12 free annual therapy sessions with a licensed clinician through Spring Health. TEGNA offers a generous Paid Time Off (PTO) benefit as well as nine paid holidays per year. Some jobs are covered by a collective bargaining agreement and thus some or all of the benefits described herein may not apply. For example, some newsroom bargaining unit employees receive health and retirement benefits under plans administered by the union.
