Position Summary Job Description: The Department of Communication and Writing seeks an imaginative, forward-thinking educator and media professional with expertise in Audio Production. You will join a growing, student-centered department of nine tenured and tenure-track faculty members across Film and Media Arts, Mass Communication, and English and Writing, and we are also currently in the process of hiring a new Video Production faculty member. The successful candidate will demonstrate a passion for mentoring undergraduate students while building a Mass Communication program that embraces new technologies and prepares graduates to shape the future of the media industry.
The successful candidate will join a well-resourced Mass Communication program, where collaboration is deeply embedded in the culture. Backed by outstanding production facilities, including a professional-grade television studio, dedicated editing bays, and a strong inventory of equipment, the program provides the tools and institutional support for faculty and students to do exceptional work. You will teach four courses per semester in audio production and podcasting. The successful candidate will help students build the technical and professional skills the modern media industry demands and provide creative and strategic leadership for a program that thrives on interdisciplinary conversations, with strong existing partnerships across Sport Media, Sport Management, Film and Media Arts, and Theatre. The department supports its faculty and students, and colleagues here are eager to work across disciplinary boundaries, building new opportunities, integrating emerging technologies, and contributing to a vibrant culture of learning and success.

Our students consistently win and place in the Broadcast Education Association (BEA) Festival of Media Arts and On Location Competitions, as well as the College Broadcasters, Inc Awards. Along with these national awards, our students also participate in the Film and Media Arts annual Student Film event, sharing their work with the campus community. Students also participate in several Student Senate-sponsored clubs, such as WVYC 88.1 FM: The York College Radio Station and the Film and Media Society. Beyond winning awards, our students go on to successful careers in local and national media markets, such as Fox43 and ESPN.
Facilities and ResourcesOur program is supported by ready-to-use production facilities and a supportive institutional ecosystem designed to help students become career-ready professionals:
- Radio Station: A fully operational, FCC-licensed campus radio station providing hands-on broadcast experience and a platform for student-produced content, live programming, podcasting, and experimental audio projects.
- Audio Production Recording & Editing Bay: A dedicated recording and editing space equipped with professional-grade hardware and software for music production, podcast creation, sound design, and post-production work.
- Professional Grade Recording Studio: YCP Studios are professional spaces that offer audio recording and production services-the recording studio and mixing suite use cutting-edge technology to record and mix an artist's work.
- Equipment/Resources: We have an inventory of microphones, field recorders, audio interfaces, headphones, and accessories available for both student and faculty use.
Outcome: The hiring of a qualified candidate for a tenure-track position in Audio Production.Essential Functions - Teach courses such as Introduction to Audio Production, Podcasting, Mass Communication Theory, Advanced Audio Production, Senior Portfolio, Media Law and Ethics, and Cinematic Audio Production, using methods and materials most appropriate for meeting program and course objectives.
- With faculty colleagues, oversee specialized facilities (radio station, recording and editing bay, equipment closet), supervise student workers, and provide expert oversight for significant equipment holdings and purchasing decisions.
- Support students in the Mass Communication major through academic advising, leading independent studies, and internship support.
- Maintain an active scholarly or artistic agenda.
Experience and Education Required - Master's degree in Audio Production, Mass Communication, Media Production, or a related field, and a minimum of five years of professional experience; earned doctorate or MFA preferred. Significant professional experience in lieu of a graduate degree may be considered.
- Demonstrated expertise in audio recording, editing, mixing, and sound design, with experience across formats such as podcasting, radio, and cinematic audio.
- Experience teaching in higher education.
- Professional industry experience in audio or media production is highly desirable.
Required Skills and Qualifications - Excellent communication skills and a strong commitment to working as part of a collaborative team.
- Ability to apply supervisory skills and motivate undergraduate students.
- Technical proficiency in current audio production software and hardware, including Adobe Audition, Pro Tools, and/or other industry-standard digital audio workstations (DAWs); familiarity with broadcast and podcasting platforms is a plus.
- Student-focused approach, with the ability to learn and apply new concepts and ideas in the service of our diverse population of learners.
