Do you have a passion for storytelling and leading others? We are looking for a News Director to join our team. Reporting to the Content Director, you will lead a local news team, drive content strategy, and ensure the delivery of relevant, high-quality stories to our audience.
The Role
- You will help lead and support a local news team under the supervision of the Content Director, fostering a collaborative and high-performing environment.
- You will analyze the work of the news team and provide regular coaching and feedback to grow both the quantity and quality of content.
- You will contribute to and oversee the creation of digital and radio news stories, including covering breaking news as needed.
- You will bring a vision to grow online readership, specifically for OkotoksOnline and HighRiverOnline, through strong editorial direction and audience-focused storytelling.
- You will ensure the team is identifying relevant story ideas, asking the right questions, and building meaningful local coverage.
- You will support the development of strong relationships with local stakeholders, community leaders, and news sources.
The Ideal Candidate
- You are a strong leader with a passion for local journalism and community engagement.
- You have a growth mindset and are committed to continuous improvement—for yourself and your team.
- You have excellent communication skills (written and verbal) and are familiar with the Canadian Press Guide.
- You bring a strategic mindset with the ability to grow audience engagement and readership.
- Experience leading a team is an asset.
- Minimum 5 years of experience in a news environment.
- Experience with Burli, audio editing software, photography, and/or videography are assets
- You are dedicated to your craft and understand the demands of covering breaking news
