The Counsel, Media Use & Royalty Manager is a professional who is responsible for maintaining and servicing performance licenses necessary to use music in various media. This role works with domestic and foreign performing rights organizations, neighboring rights organizations as well as acting as a contact and liaison for record labels, music publishers, and artists relative to serve as a point of contact to maintain licensing agreements, researching and processing data, rendering reporting and timely accounting and remitting payments on a timely basis. The role will also prepare, review and process royalty accounting reports, remitting payment for incentive compensation payees and writers and authors (K-LOVE Books).
This is an onsite role.
Here's some of what you will be doing...
- Contract management: Drafting, reviewing, and negotiating contracts across various domains, including real estate leases, technology contracts, and marketing agreements
- Compliance: Supports K-LOVE’s compliance with relevant regulatory laws and regulations, advising on matters related to industry-specific standards and corporate policies.
- Mergers and Acquisitions: Provides legal support throughout real and personal property, including real estate, leases, and the mergers and acquisitions process, including conducting due diligence and advising on structuring and documentation.
- Intellectual Property: Manages, protects, and enforces the Ministry’s intellectual property, including patents, trademarks, and copyrights, and with supporting representation of the Ministry’s intellectual property rights in negotiations and matters with third-parties.
- Media: Provides legal support with media and entertainment matters, including content creation, distribution, and legal compliance, involving pre-publication review of content, advising on defamation, privacy, copyright, and intellectual property issues, negotiating and drafting contracts, and providing legal education to internal teams as well as advising on the legal aspects of music licensing, including negotiating and drafting agreements with record labels, publishers, and other stakeholders.
- HR Partnership & Global Employment Practices: Provides legal support to the HR team on global employment practices, employment handbook updates, compliance training, and new country expansion, and offer Ministry-wide partnership through legal guidance on a wide range of employment-related matters, including employee onboarding and offboarding, performance, and discipline, and interpretation and application of HR policies and procedures
- Research, assemble and process music use data for reporting compliance obligations to domestic and foreign performing rights and neighboring rights organizations.
- Liaison with internal K-LOVE divisional clients to obtain and process data (e.g., cue sheets, international donor data, music use reports, etc.) and ensure all music use is properly tracked, reported and fully compliant, both domestically and internationally.
- Knowledge of PRO's, SoundExchange, Music Licensing, Publishing Royalties, and general responsibilities involved with media content creation.
- Work with K-LOVE leaders to create processes that ensureall music use, domestic and international, is properly tracked, reported, and fully compliant.
- Maintain liaison relationships with external domestic and foreign performing rights organizations such as ASCAP, BMI, SESAC, and GMR, as well as domestic and foreign neighboring rights organizations, such as SoundExchange, regarding reporting obligations and troubleshooting.
- Responsible for remitting all required payments and ensuring payments are made on time.
- Stay up to date with industry trends and changes in licensing regulations. Ensure that their organization is compliant with all relevant laws and regulations.

Here's some experience and skills we are seeking...
- Juris Doctorate and Bachelor’s degree in music business, entertainment law, accounting or combination of education/training with relevant experience; LLM and experience with international matters a plus.
- Minimum 7 years’ experience practicing law
- Minimum 4-5 years’ experience in license compliance industry including work with PROs, Royalty Organizations.
- 5 plus years working on contracts, negotiations, and music licensing.
- 5 plus years giving legal advice and preparing legal memoranda
- Ability to manage multiple projects from beginning to end.
- Strong written and verbal communication. Adept in communications and organizational awareness in understanding dynamics with external customers and internal stakeholders.
- Proficient with customer interface, engagement, and managing sensitive external communications.
- Proficient in client negotiations, related to establishing and resolving compliance findings and licensing discrepancies within the context of purchasing licenses.
- Proficient in data analytics/reporting and program management.
- Experience with databases or record repository applications, desirable.
- Detail oriented towards producing high-quality deliverables for an executive audience.
- A collaborative and flexible style, with a strong service mentality. Need to be seen as a team player.
- Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to develop sincere business/ministry relationships.
