WHAT WE EXPECT OF YOU

SUMMARY
The Director, Broadcast Research will perform a critical role at the League, leading the group responsible for analyzing and interpreting NHL and sports fan viewing behaviors in order to surface insights that inform programming, scheduling, content, and fan development strategies.

The successful candidate must have boundless intellectual curiosity and an aptitude for synthesizing and distilling disparate quantitative and qualitative findings into coherent, easily digested, and actionable recommendations. They will be energized by the opportunity to explore empirically-grounded paths for NHL viewership growth.

The Director must be a self-starter with previous project management experience and keen analytical and communication skills, comfortable participating in - even leading discussions with - senior executives.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Oversee internal reporting for all national NHL telecasts – and vendor reporting for international broadcasts - and create periodic summaries on season-to-date performance of NHL, Club and competitive sports programming
Mine syndicated viewership data (Nielsen, Numeris) to identify scheduling, programming, and marketing levers to increase NHL consumption and to illuminate ratings highlights for PR and Communications
Propose and (co-)lead custom quantitative and qualitative research initiatives to enhance the collective League understanding of sports/NHL fan viewing motivations and behaviors
Partner on efforts to evaluate long and short form original content and alternative game presentations
Closely monitor and communicate trends in the linear television and streaming landscape, with particular focus on “newer” (e.g., Smart TV-based) audience measurement and the utilization of data science/AI in sports scheduling
Cultivate career and skill development of Manager, Broadcast Research

QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge Areas/Experience

Required

12+ years of prior market research and/or data analysis experience
Extensive experience analyzing syndicated U.S. or Canadian television viewership data - ideally with several years dedicated to hockey or other sports programming
Strong knowledge of the sports industry, the business of television, and streaming media
Adroitness in various Nielsen or Numeris software platforms

Education/Certifications

Ideal candidate will have a bachelor’s degree or 15 years of relevant work experience

Highly developed verbal and written communication skills with the ability to influence at leadership levels

SALARY RANGE:

$130-155K

Actual base pay for a successful candidate will be determined based on a variety of job-related factors, including but not limited to: experience/training, market demands, and geographic location.
