Almost all Americans love cars. We name them. We take pictures of them. And even if we don't love them, we are affected by them every day.
The Detroit Free Press is looking for a talented journalist to cover the experience of buying, owning and making the most of an automobile. This car culture reporter will produce content that centers on consumers and focuses on buying and operating advice, technological advances, auto trends and how people feel about their vehicles.
About
We seek an innovative reporter with at least two years of demonstrated enterprise experience, who has the ability to create a fresh approach to writing about cars and the people who feel passionately about them. This reporter will produce essential consumer information that touches on:
- Questions and advice
- How things work
- People / personal stories
- Buying advice and pricing news
- Finance and car loan updates
- What to know about insurance
- Classic cars / nostalgia
- Driving tips
- Auto service how-to's; vehicle care
The car culture reporter will help guide readers across the USA Today Network through the car purchasing journey, answering the most pressing questions and highlighting lessons learned. While auto or consumer reporting experience is helpful, it is not required. This position reports to the Free Press autos editor.
Responsibilities
- Develop deep understanding of the auto industry and consumer buying trends, including product development, technology and design trends.
- Cultivate an audience of car buyers and enthusiasts by engaging readers with valuable information that helps them navigate the car-buying and owning experience.
- Offer car culture news in a variety of media formats including video and social media.
- Develop familiarity with audience metrics to focus time and attention on topics that resonate with Free Press readers.
Requirements
- At least three years of reporting experience that includes breaking news and enterprise work and demonstrates source development.
- Comfort using social media platforms, including but not limited to Facebook, X, Instagram and Reddit.
- Proficiency in finding trends in data.
- Experience taking photos and video on a mobile device.
- Strong communication skills, news judgment and headline-writing ability.
- Ability to efficiently manage multiple stories and projects at the same time.
- Ability to multitask and excel under deadline pressure.
- Ability to work collaboratively.
- Strong writing, spelling and grammar skills; familiarity with AP style.
How To Apply
We are eager to learn more about you and how you fit this role. When you apply, don’t limit your upload to a resume; show us what you’ve done. To do so, put together a single document file that includes the following, in this order:
- Your resume – one to two pages.
- A cover letter that outlines how you would approach the job.
- Links to 3-6 online samples of your work. Show us what you’ve produced or had a hand in that best reflects what you can do in your desired role.
