The right candidate will be equally strong behind the desk and in the field — someone who brings original story ideas every day, delivers outstanding live anchoring, and consistently produces enterprise reporting that advances KMOV’s coverage across linear, streaming, and digital platforms.
Duties/Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Why this role matters:
1. This role is not "anchor-only." KMOV expects its Anchor/Reporters to be working reporters first: pitching, reporting, producing, and publishing meaningful journalism every single day.
2. The successful candidate will be an individual who demonstrates leadership and mentorship, raises standards, supports teammates, and drives editorial vision.
3. A digital-first mindset is required: content must perform across KMOV and Gray Media streaming and digital properties.
Key requirements (must-have):
1. Demonstrated newsroom leadership: proven ability to lead a team, mentor peers, and make editorial decisions under deadline pressure.
2. Daily journalistic output: must be willing and able to research, produce, and deliver at least one original act of journalism each day (daily enterprise, beat piece, investigative follow-up, or field report).
3. Strong reporting skills: ability to conceive, develop, and execute story ideas independently — thorough sourcing, strong interviewing, accurate and compelling storytelling.
4. Equally strong anchoring skills: confident live delivery, ability to introduce and integrate reports from reporters, sports, and weather, and calm, authoritative presence during breaking news.
5. Deep knowledge of the greater St. Louis community: established contacts, demonstrated experience covering local issues, and a genuine stake in community events and concerns.
6. Digital-first producer: comfortable posting and optimizing stories for web and social, creating short-form video and streaming segments, and repurposing content across platforms.
7. Willingness to work in the field: frequent field assignments and ability to serve as a Field Anchor when required.
Core responsibilities:
1. Anchor live newscasts consistently and deliver unscripted breaking news coverage with accuracy and composure.
2. Report daily: develop and execute at least one original story per day for broadcast and digital distribution.
3. Pitch story ideas and collaborate with producers to turn concepts into executable newscasts, teasers, and promotions.
4. Post and optimize stories on KMOV’s website and social platforms; collaborate with digital teams to maximize audience and engagement.
5. Build and maintain strong community contacts and represent KMOV at community events and public forums.
What success looks like:
1. A steady pipeline of original, impactful stories produced and published daily.
2. High-quality live anchoring that complements strong reporting, especially during breaking news or field coverage.
3. Measurable digital engagement across KMOV and Gray Media streaming platforms (website views, social interactions, streaming audience growth).
4. Strong, visible ties to the St. Louis community and frequent, relevant community-driven reporting.
Qualifications/Requirements:
1. Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, Communications, or related field preferred.
2. 3–5 years of experience in a Reporter or Anchor role at a television station — candidates with a demonstrated track record of daily reporting and newsroom leadership will be prioritized.
3. Exceptional verbal and written communication skills; strong interview and listening abilities.
4. Creative reporter with the ability to generate original story ideas and visual concepts.
5. Comfortable working in a fast-paced environment with strict deadlines and a team-oriented approach.
