The Corus Entertainment Law Department currently has an opening for a lawyer to join the department in Toronto, reporting to the Vice President, Associate General Counsel of the Corporate Law Team.
Corus’ Entertainment Law Department provides legal advice and services to Corus’ various business units. The Corporate Team manages a broad portfolio, including corporate services, corporate transactions, real estate, corporate securities, labour and employment, intellectual property, technology, privacy, and litigation.
The successful candidate will be responsible for providing legal advice, guidance, and strategic support in respect of Corus’ diverse real estate portfolio. The successful candidate will also provide legal advice and services in other areas of the Corporate Team’s portfolio. This role blends deep knowledge of corporate and commercial law, with an emphasis on real estate, coupled with strong business acumen.
You will contribute by:
- Advise on commercial real estate transactions and development projects.
- Identify, assess, and mitigate legal risks associated with real estate transactions and corporate property operations.
- Advise executives and business units on legal risks, regulatory requirements, and commercial implications of real estate decisions.
- Negotiate and draft purchase and sale agreements, leases, license agreements, development agreements, and joint venture contracts.
- Provide legal support for corporate real estate strategy, including portfolio optimization, site selection, and asset management.
- Support acquisitions, divestitures, and development projects involving real property assets, including overseeing due diligence (e.g., title review, zoning, land use, environmental reports, construction laws, surveys, corporate structure).
- Ensure compliance with applicable real estate laws and regulations across a complex portfolio, including zoning, land use, environmental regulations, and construction laws.
- Advise on real estate financing transactions, including mortgages, credit facilities, and refinancing arrangements.
- Liaise with government authorities, regulatory bodies, and external counsel as needed.
- Develop and implement internal policies, templates, and best practices to streamline real estate processes.
Skills and experience you will bring:
- Lawyer in good standing with the Law Society of Ontario.
- 2–5 years of experience in commercial real estate law, corporate law, or a related field at a top tier law firm or a large organization.
- Experience working with corporate real estate teams, developers, REITs, or large commercial landlords/tenants.
- Experience drafting and negotiating commercial real estate agreements.
- Experience working with the media industry is preferred.
- Strong understanding of corporate transactions, commercial leasing, property development, and financing.
- Excellent drafting and negotiation skills.
- Attention to detail and high level of accuracy.
- Ability to manage multiple complex projects with tight timelines.
- Strong leadership, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
- Collaborative mindset and comfort working with multidisciplinary teams (finance, operations, construction, procurement).
- Proven ability to build strong working relationships with colleagues, internal clients, and counterparts.
- Exceptional communication skills, including the ability to communicate legal concepts to non‑lawyers.
- Adaptable and interested in learning new skills and practice areas when needed.
